Atlanta Thrashers: A professional NHL hockey team based in Atlanta, Georgia, United States. Atlanta was awarded a NHL franchise on June 25, 1997. This marked a return to Atlanta by the NHL.
The team made NHL history on Opening Night by having five black players on the roster at once, as Dustin Byfuglien, Nigel Dawes, Evander Kane, Johnny Oduya and Anthony Stewart all made the team, making it the first time a team in hockey employed five players of color, which could be considered a major selling point in Atlanta, a city with a predominantly African-American population.
Since the Atlanta Thrashers inception, their home games have been played at Philips Arena in downtown Atlanta.
